We often think that in order to create the big change in our lives it is going to require some super-size effort. But the truth is, life is shaped by what we do every day, not the once in a blue moon stuff. By adding in a few intentional, small habits to your routine, you can really create more peace, productivity, and joy in your life with surprisingly little effort. So, before you think you have to be a constant member of the hot mess express club take a look below and you might be surprised how easy it might be to kind of get your life together... I say kind of because let's be honest, we all are a mess occasionally.
The Pit Stop Clean
You know those pit crews you work at the speed of light and only have a limited amount of time to put the cars needs back together? Well, I do the same thing with the clutter that is creating stress in my home! Cleaning it all at once can feel overwhelming, like an entire day type task. Instead set a timer for 15 20 minutes each evening or morning (whenever you prefer) and pick up as much as you can. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish in a short time window, and you will get to go to bed or wake up to a tidier home!
You can try to make it more fun; I personally like to jam out to some of the best hits of the 90s or 2000's on my Spotify playlists. You can involve you family or even challenge yourself to beat yesterday's progress or get a set number of things down before the time is up.
Now you might be saying that's great and all but what about those baseboards that never seem to stay clean or the windows with the kid's fingerprints, or the dust bunnies hiding on every surface in your house. which brings me to my next tip!
Daily Deep Cleaning Task
That's right I said TASK as in singular. Instead of spending your weekends scrubbing the entire house, top to bottom and wasting a beautiful day away on just cleaning, pick one deep-cleaning task per day. For example:
Monday: Bathrooms (that's right get those toilets, tubs, showers, everything)
Tuesday: Dusting
Wednesday: Floors
Thursday: Kitchen (now I personally cannot sleep until my kitchen is tidy before bed, so I personally put in walls and baseboards here just a couple rooms per day)
Friday: Sheets/windows
It takes just 20-30 minutes a day, but it keeps your home feeling fresh without ever feelings like a HUGE chore. Also, if you do have a dedicated cleaning day you will find everything is already pretty clean, so things go A LOT faster. Now you can have time for other more fun things.
2- Minute Rule
Now this next one may be harder to incorporate but I feel like it makes the biggest impact. If something takes less than 2 minutes, do it now. That's right you heard me, as in right now. This could be washing your coffee mug and putting it in the dishwasher, replying to that email, hanging up your jacket when you walk in, or wiping down the counters. This tiny habit prevents small tasks from snowballing into the overwhelming mess.
Now listen don't come at me because of this one, it works for me but might not work for you personally that is ok! Or if you are Mr. August you may have a moto like his "that is tomorrow [insert name] problem." I get needing a break or those times when you just DO NOT have it in you to do the things but letting it snowball is for sure the quickest way for those tiny tasks to turn into the day long to-do list.
Personal Tiny habits
Ok so while having a clean house makes me feel pretty accomplished in my life but often times if I have a clean home I found I failed in other areas like, ME! On days where I cleaned my house and finished with it spic and span, I noticed I forgot to eat, didn't drink a sip of water and forget about an actual workout because after cleaning my floors and walk in shower I was literally, tapped out. So, I started to implement so small changes in my day to day for myself too. Drinking a big glass of water as soon as I wake up helps rehydrate and give my brain a boost. Plus, on those busy days where I am a terrible hydrator I start my day already getting 8-12 oz!
TIP: I set a mason jar of filtered water and Celtic salt next to my bed at night. It dissolves and when I wake every morning I chug it down. Talk about hydration!
Now my next daily takes about -5-10 minutes depending on my mood and time but I like to end or start my day with a stretch and then feet up against the wall for at least 2 of those minutes. Nothing crazy just some deep breathing and stretching but I did find my sleep is dramatically better if I do these before bed. Also, I LOVE to sleep in a good pair of compression socks. My personal favs are from Nurse Yard (not sponsored, just a huge fan!) Try these tips yourself and see if you notice a difference!
The last tip I suggest is finding a time through your day to write down three things you are grateful for. No matter if it is something from the day, something small, big things, etc. This small habit takes a quick minute, but research shows it can improve your sleep (if done before bed), boost happiness, and reduce stress over time.
Let's Wrap It Up
Big goals are exciting, those small, consistent habits are what actually change our lives. Try adding one or two of these habits into your daily routine and see if you notice how much better you feel.
What small habits have made a big difference in your life? Share in the comments below, I would love to hear and maybe try to incorporate some into my own day-to-day.
Things I Use Personally
I am TRYING to be more natural but when it comes to cleaning (after taking microbiology in school), sometimes I just need the peace of mind that the bacteria are actually gone. So, to each their own on what you use, remember "we listen but we don't judge." ***Not sponsored by any of the products or companies**
LVF floors - Mop with the O Cedar Spin Mop - I use water Clorox Bleach and Tide powder laundry detergent- original scent mixture
Dusting - I use microfiber towels
Sinks/glass stove top - Bar Keepers friend to get the scuff marks off (Use those gloves) and a Scrub Daddy sponge, disinfectant spray (let's be honest, whichever I have in my cabinet at the time)
Window/Glass- Windex original (I know it's not the crunchy option, but I haven't found any alternative that gets the results I want yet.)
