Bloating isn't just uncomfortable- it can tank your confidence and completely ruin your day. It happens without your control, even if you are trying to do all the right things, like eating healthy and exercising. You might still feel like your stomach has a personal vendetta against you. The constant feeling of being swollen, tight, or gassy is just plain miserable.
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone! You, me, and so many others (according to my research, around 30% of adults struggle with frequent bloating) are constantly battling the sneaky culprits daily- and it's not just "overeating" like many want to blame.
On my personal health journey to better understand my body and gut, I have come to realize 7 hidden causes of belly bloat, and lucky for us some natural fixes you can start today!
Imbalanced Gut Bacteria
Turns out your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, and when the bad guys outnumber the good guys, bloating tends to follow. This imbalance (called dysbiosis) often comes from misuse of antibiotics, processed foods, chronic stress, or other internal issues.
Now I know what you are thinking, that's great information, but I am looking for how to FIX IT!
If you are like me, then your social media is flooded with promises of quick fixes. Anything from powders to pills, and everything in between, but the science all agrees on starting with some natural steps.
- Eat more fermented foods! These are foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and some kombucha(be sure to look at the sugar content, though)
-Add in a high-quality probiotic and maybe even a Prebiotic too!
-Cut down on added sugars that feed the bad bacteria (look at those labels, you will be surprised to see how much sugar is added to literally everything these days)
Eating Too Fast
Chewing quickly or eating on the run makes you swallow excess air and leaves your stomach playing catch-up. This leads to gas and pressure.
-Sit down and focus on your meal.
-Chew each bite thoroughly (about 20-30 times per bite is recommended)
-Put your fork down between each bite
Now, it may seem like incorporating these tips will make your meal require some serious time, but you might be surprised that while it does slow you down, there are a few perks involved. Slowing down allowed me to make dinner a stress-free family time, where great conversations happen and memories are made! Slowing down also allows my body to recognize when I am full earlier. I found I was eating less by eating slowly! ( This meant fewer calories consumed, aka less to have to burn off later.)
Hidden Food Sensitivities
Even "healthy" foods can trigger inflammation and bloating if you're sensitive to them. Common culprits include gluten, dairy, soy, and eggs. Sometimes the least suspecting food can be the one that causes you the most discomfort.
-Keep a food journal to track patterns- I found that this was an eye-opening experience. I discovered how much food I was actually eating, since I tend to "snack" all day. This also helps you start to understand which foods are giving you certain symptoms.
-Try an elimination. I recommend doing this under the guidance of a doctor/nutritionist.
-Always opt for whole, unprocessed foods.
Hormonal Imbalances
Hormones are a B****. Estrogen and cortisol can cause water retention and slow digestion, both of which can contribute to bloat, especially before your period.
-Manage stress with deep breathing, yoga, or journaling.
-Prioritize sleep to support hormone health. Sleep is more important than you know.
-Eat more magnesium-rich foods (spinach, pumpkin seeds).
Low Stomach Acid
Surprisingly, too little stomach acid (not too much) can cause undigested food to ferment in your gut, leading to gas and bloating.
-Drink a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in water before meals
-Eat bitter greens like arugula and dandelion before eating.
-Avoid drinking large amounts of water with meals (it can dilute the acid).
Constipation
When things aren't moving, gas and waste build up, leaving you bloated and sluggish.
-Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps your entire body function smoothly and properly
-Add fiber gradually - think chia seeds, flaxseeds, and veggies. (TIP! If you are currently dealing with digestive issues and don't tolerate seeds well, try grinding up the seeds before consuming.)
-MOVEMENT! This is a big one. Try to move your body daily to stimulate digestion.
Carbonated Drinks
Even "healthy" sparkling water can fill your belly with bubbles and leave you puffed up.
-Swap out your fizzy drink for still water or a herbal tea. Don't forget the honey!
-Try infused water with cucumber, lemon, or berries.
DEBLOAT and DEBRIEF
Bloating is your body's way of telling you something is off. By tuning into these hidden causes and making a few simple changes, you can feel lighter, more comfortable, and confident in your own skin - naturally.
